grabbin' grub
Aaaahhhhhh… I never thought I would enjoy washing a car so much. It is about 113 degrees out right now. I caught a ride over to ops with a buddy who was going to wash his car. I wanted to drop some flags off with the flying squadron over there who will fly a flag over Iraq for me and do up a nice certificate. Grandpa’s Christmas Prize… don’t tell him.
Anyway… after that errand was done, we went to wash his car. The mist – probably with kicked up with talcum-powder they call sand – got all over me and it felt fantastic.
After I’ve been doing something for long enough, I’m able to find work-arounds for the things I don’t like. The one thing I dread on my day off is the long walk to the chow hall. On days I work, the other chow hall is right next to my office. But on days off, I have to walk a pretty decent way. So for lunch every Monday I’m off, I’ve been doing Subway – which is close – but isn’t like the Subway in the states. There’s something wrong with the bread. Not so fresh and you have to pay for it unlike any other meal on base… so if I’m going to have to have a crappy sandwich instead of walking in the beating sun to the chow hall… I want it free.
There is a place here called the grab and go… or the grab some grub… something like that. Kind of a to-go place you can get 2 of everything… cereal, fruit, drink, snack and various sandwiches. So today… after having 4 days off now in the almost 60 days I’ve been here… I made it a point to get some to-go food after the car wash before I’m trapped in my room for a day. Although I really enjoy not having to wake up (even though I will easily be awake by 6am)… not doing anything in my roommate-less room… I kind of prefer just going to work. I need the day off simply so I don’t have to shave for one day a week… the couple weeks I didn’t get a proper day off and had to shave for almost 3 weeks straight, I thought my face was going to burn off. Such sensitive skin… have to take a break.
I just found drugstore.com which ships to APO addresses… and spent some cash on some products. Not the products I normally use, but will do in the interim. Although I brought Clinique for men stuff with me that is almost gone – I can’t justify spending that cash when I don’t care a flying pig what I look like at the moment.
My goal for the day off is to go buy speakers at the BX. They have small portable speakers there for $10 and I just discovered my iPod has an alarm clock… how great is that? I can wake up to music now instead of that incessant beeping from that $2 travel alarm clock piece of crap that only has a 4 minute snooze on it.
So I saw Jim Catchatore from the weather channel was back in my old hood in Florida with that storm Arlene… I think that man just brings a truck with a big wind machine in it wherever he goes.
Going to finish watching “Apt Pupil.” Kind of sucks… but nothing else to do and the movie server is limited in movies I’ve not seen.
Dinner last night: Minestrone soup and jello
Breakfast: eggs, bacon, oatmeal with raisins, coffee and apple juice… still no OJ. WTF Florida!
Lunch: Turkey, stuffing, way bad wax beans that were not cooked properly. Wax beans are normally cooked to all hell… how do you make wax beans crunchy? Gross… must be normal beans bleached by the sun. Why can’t they have broccoli every day?
For dinner tonight I think I’m just going to pour a bowl of milk and mash up some cookies in it. Or maybe some Chocolate cake and have chocolate cake soup.
Cheers,
d
